Platoon practice

A Platoon Practice is any exercise in which a platoon takes part as a hole. The purpose of this type of exercise is threefold: First, it offers platoon members the chance to get accustomed to their weapons, roles and equipment so that they will know how to properly operate them. Secondly, this can provide soldiers with an opportunity to participate in a realistic scenario, because sometimes scenarios are setup to give hands-on experience. Thirdly it offers an opportunity for platoon members and sections to learn how to work together.

Monthly practice

It is the responsibility of Platoon sergeant to organize platoon training at a minimum frequency of once per month. In this context, training can be combat skill or technique training, scrimmages against other platoons, or scenario-based games that enhances or focuses on the use of a previously taught combat skill or technique.

Platoon Training Plan

The PTP shall include the following:

  • Training Title: Subject to be covered by the training (ex. Platoon Ambush Training)
  • Training Goal: Clearly state the goal for the training session (ex. Teach sections to work together to set up an ambush)
  • Training Material: Include any material (reading or pictures) required to complete the training (ex. Map pictures with names)
  • Training Plan: A description of the planned activities, including drills, maps to be used, etc. in order to complete the training (ex. Section will tour maps X, Y, and Z and call out the names of the different areas)

Training After Action Report

Training After Action Report (TAAR) will be sent to the Platoon Leader for inclusion in the weekly Platoon Leader Report. The Post Training Assessment element is the PSG’s assessment of how successful the training session was. The PSG should include things such as lessons learned (things that went right and/or wrong), future improvements, performance of the troops, etc.

Procedure

5.2. Platoon Training:

    • 5.2.1. It is the responsibility of PSG to organize platoon training at a minimum frequency of once per month. In this context, training can be combat skill or technique training, scrimmages against other platoons, or scenario-based games that enhances or focuses on the use of a previously taught combat skill or technique.
    • 5.2.2. PSG will base their training on guidelines from their PL, the S3 Department, or their own initiative.
    • 5.2.3. PSG are responsible for organizing each platoon training and drafting a Platoon Training Plan (PTP) to be posted, in advanced of the scheduled training session, for their troopers to read, understand and prepare if necessary.
      • 5.2.3.1. The PTP shall include the following: (see above for format)

    • 5.2.4. Following each training session, PSG will provide their PL with a Training After Action Report (TAAR). This report should be sent to the PL for inclusion in the weekly Platoon Leader Report.
      • 5.2.4.1. In addition to all the elements of the PTP, the TAAR shall include a Post Training Assessment element.
        • 5.2.4.1.1. The Post Training Assessment element is the PSG’s assessment of how successful the training session was. The PSG should include things such as lessons learned (things that went right and/or wrong), future improvements, performance of the troops, etc.
